Dear students, one by one in our work and in our play, we are teaching peace by what we do and what we say.

Let us see together in which ways we are carrying this out.

Activity – Peace is …

Beforehand, the teacher prepares heart templates for the children, and on them, the children write what the word ‘peace’ means to them.

Discussion

How can I be peaceful?

How can I teach those around me to be peaceful?

The animator can write down all that the students say, by writing the word ‘peace’  in the centre of the paper or interactive board and writing all the students say around it.

When the discussion is ready pinpoint the most important aspects that the students are to remember and highlight them or underline them in another colour.

Game

On their tablets, the students find short biographies about people who worked for peace in the world.

Give the students some time, and then in turns, they mention the person they found. This game can be done also in groups of twos, threes, and fours.

Learning Outcomes

  1. The students will be able to mention the qualities that contribute to an honest friendship such as honesty, sincerity, and faithfulness.
  2. They will be able to analyze a real-life situation and describe how we can bring peace with our actions and words.
  3. They will understand the model of true friendship God gives us by reflecting on quotations about friendship and love from the Bible.

Introduction

Step 1

(Slide 1-2) The animator starts by showing the second slide with the words: What are the qualities of a true friend? Then the animator asks the students to write a word or phrase which comes to mind about friendship on a flip chart, the interactive whiteboard or a large sheet of paper. What are the characteristics of a true friend? The animator can help the students by writing the first word or phrase as an example. For example:

A true friend is someone who…

  1. listens to what I say and cannot say;
  2. who stands by you in good and bad times;
  3. who rejoices in your success;
  4. appreciates your good qualities;
  5. corrects you when you are wrong;
  6. gives a good example;
  7. is not jealous or envious;
  8. accepts you the way you are;
  9. does not gossip about you;
  10. keeps your secrets;

Lesson Development

Step 2

(Slide 3) The animator tells the students that they are going to discuss the topic: What are the Characteristics of a True Friend? and invites the students to watch a short video clip about two friends.

Step 3

(Slide 4) When the footage ends, the animator uses some of the following questions to encourage the students to discuss the case study of these two friends and to get feedback and their reactions to what they saw.

  1. How would you describe Shaun and Daniel’s friendship?
  2. Is jealousy a good or bad quality? Why?
  3. Have you ever had such a situation with a friend?
  4.  How did it make you feel and how you handle it?

Step 4

(Slide 5-10) The animator continues the discussion about true friendship by referring to the characteristics of a true friendship by referring to the pictures with bible quotations about friendship and asking questions to encourage feedback from the students. Throughout the discussion the animator emphasises these values and good qualities: loyalty, honesty, sincerity, truthfulness, openness, altruism, kindness, caring, acceptance, forgiveness and respect.

Thank you for the friends I have in my life.
Help me to choose my friends wisely so I can be a good example to them.
Help me to be faithful, sincere and loving to others. Amen.
