Resources
Powerpoint Presentation, interactive whiteboard
Introduction
Step 1
(Slide 1-2) The animator starts by showing the second slide with the words: What are the qualities of a true friend? Then the animator asks the students to write a word or phrase which comes to mind about friendship on a flip chart, the interactive whiteboard or a large sheet of paper. What are the characteristics of a true friend? The animator can help the students by writing the first word or phrase as an example. For example:
A true friend is someone who…
- listens to what I say and cannot say;
- who stands by you in good and bad times;
- who rejoices in your success;
- appreciates your good qualities;
- corrects you when you are wrong;
- gives a good example;
- is not jealous or envious;
- accepts you the way you are;
- does not gossip about you;
- keeps your secrets;
Lesson Development
Step 2
(Slide 3) The animator tells the students that they are going to discuss the topic: What are the Characteristics of a True Friend? and invites the students to watch a short video clip about two friends.
footage from 00.00-2.03
Step 3
(Slide 4) When the footage ends, the animator uses some of the following questions to encourage the students to discuss the case study of these two friends and to get feedback and their reactions to what they saw.
- How would you describe Shaun and Daniel’s friendship?
- Is jealousy a good or bad quality? Why?
- Have you ever had such a situation with a friend?
- How did it make you feel and how you handle it?
Step 4
(Slide 5-10) The animator continues the discussion about true friendship by referring to the characteristics of a true friendship by referring to the pictures with bible quotations about friendship and asking questions to encourage feedback from the students. Throughout the discussion the animator emphasises these values and good qualities: loyalty, honesty, sincerity, truthfulness, openness, altruism, kindness, caring, acceptance, forgiveness and respect.
Prayer
(Slide 11) Dear God,
Thank you for the friends I have in my life.
Help me to choose my friends wisely so I can be a good example to them.
