During this learning time, participants will be invited to briefly discover the personality of St Francis of Assisi and grow in their sense of gratitude towards all created things, in particular towards the sun.  While comparing the sun to a jolly brother who brightens and warms their day they will be invited to think of ways how like the sun they can help bring warmth, light and happiness to others who came their way.

How to carry out this lesson:

  1. Start by taking the time to watch the Barney Mr Sun video

2. What do you think this video is all about?

3.    Can you remember how the video started?

4. Take some time to think about the sun.

Can you imagine your life without ever having the sun shining in the morning?

How does the sun make you feel?

Do you like its warmth and the light it gives us?

5. Once a man named Francis who lived in Assisi wanted to show the people how much they should be thankful for the gift of life and all created things such as the sun.  He used to refer to the sun as his brother.

Have you ever thought of the sun as your brother?

Like a good brother, the sun makes your days brighter, fills you with energy and makes you feel warm.

6. Take some time to think how like the ‘brother sun’ you can happily start your days for you and those around you. If you feel like it, you can share your ideas with the rest of the classroom.

7. St Francis had several ideas of how he can brighten the days of those he met like the ‘brother sun’. Take some time to watch this video entitled: A Day in the Life of St Francis:

8. Do you think it was easy for St Francis to help and bring happiness to everyone he met?

Can you recall how the video started and what was St Francis doing before he went out for his day?

From where do you think he found the courage and the energy to be like ‘brother sun’?

9. Now, you can cut around the sun template and you can either draw a smiley face on it using the markers or you can stick two googly eyes, a small pompom for the nose and draw the mouth with a marker.

10. This smiley face will remind you to do your best to bring happiness and to be kind and warm to everyone.

11. Since this is not an easy thing to do like Francis you can, use this time to pray.  You can thank God for the gift of the Sun and ask him to help you bring happiness to everyone you meet.

Example:  Dear God, I  want to thank you for the gift of the sun because _______________. Please help me be like ‘Brother Sun’.
