On Monday, 29th May 2017, St Margaret College Senior Secondary School Verdala students assembled for the annual Crowning celebration of Our Lady during their morning assembly prayers. This celebration was organised by teacher Martin Azzopardi sdc and Tony Scerri involving a group of Form 3 students.

The celebration opened by a reflection reading led by student Grazia Magro where students could reflect upon the true Christian meaning of the Crowning celebration of Our Lady. Crowning the statue of the Virgin Mary means acknowledging Mary, Mother of Jesus as Queen of Heavens and promising to follow her example throughout the Christian life. Acknowledging Mary as Queen of Heavens entails also a sense of commitment to follow Jesus’ Way with an open heart to love everyone.

During this celebration, students were invited to recite one station of prayer from the rosary with three special intentions as requested by the Archbishop of Malta, Mons Charles J. Scicluna. The first prayer intention is to find a just solution to the problem of immigration around the world. The second prayer intention is to have an end to the persecution against Christians especially in those countries where Christians are a minority and the third intention is to have peace in the world.

Every year, throughout this celebration a student from Cospicua is selected to crown the statue of Our Lady at St. Margaret Verdala School and this year student Leon Buttigieg was chosen. As soon as student Leon stepped up the ladder to crown the statue of Our Lady, all students and teachers applauded with joy committing themselves to pray the rosary under those three special prayer intentions.

May religious celebrations at school serve as a means to grow in love and solidarity with one another.
