Three Maltese representatives who work with youth and educators represented the Maltese Church during a meeting of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE), held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, from the 19th to the 22nd of September 2024.

The event, themed “Young People Rejoice in Hope: Witnessing Christ in Today’s Europe,” brought together various members of the CCEE Youth Commission, young people, educators, university representatives, and those involved in the field of vocations.

Representing Malta were Maria Emma Buhagiar, who represented the youth; Silvana Cardona, who represented the Spiritual Development in Schools; and Benjamin Flores Martin, the Archbishop’s Delegate for Youth.

Also present at this conference was Cardinal Mario Grech, who shared his vision for the upcoming Synod, while Fr. Francesco Scalzotto from the Dicastery for Evangelization explained the Church’s plans for the Jubilee.

The conference provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the role of the Church in Europe, inspired by the document Christus Vivit, in anticipation of the Synod on Synodality and in preparation for the Jubilee of Hope in 2025.

Young participants from across Europe shared their insights on various topics as well as their experiences during World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon. They emphasized the profound impact of these events on their spiritual lives and expressed their desire to bring the same zeal to their parishes and local communities.

The conference also served as a platform for those involved in youth and education sectors to discuss best practices and the future of the Church with young people. CCEE contributors presented studies and research to guide the development of effective pastoral programs that address the needs of today’s youth.

Santiago de Compostela was chosen as the primary location for this conference due to its profound spiritual significance as a renowned pilgrimage destination in Europe. This setting symbolizes the Church’s journey during the Jubilee and reflects the mission of pilgrims on their path toward renewal.
