Welcome

The head, SLT, or educator who is administering the assembly welcomes the students by saying good morning. One can start the assembly with the sign of the cross or a minute in silence.

Reflection

👉slide 2

Although sometimes we fight and we don’t agree, it is possible to be peaceful together. Let us sing and dance together: (children in groups of twos or threes imitate gestures)

Dear Lord, help us to share your peace with everyone. Amen.

Equipment needed

Two blown-up balloons and a marker.

Reflection

👉 slide 2

Being peaceful refers to situations, scenes, and activities where there are no disturbances. This is really difficult in the life we are living nowadays, but you and I can strive to be peaceful and make others peaceful.

Head of School or the person leading the assembly:

  • Put your hands together and rub them.  What can you feel?
  • Yes, that’s right! – your hands are becoming warmer, and friction begins to take place when two surfaces are against each other. This is what happens in our lives. Resistance also starts to take place. Ex. When someone says something you don’t like, and you reply back.
  • Rub the balloons together. What happens? (Listen to the sounds the balloons are making) It starts to be annoying. But if the balloons are tied together and decorate a room for a party, it presents a calmer and more peaceful situation.
  • On one balloon write ‘be’ and on the other one ‘peaceful’, and hang the balloons in a frequent pass-by area.

Singing our National Anthem.

👉 slide 3

These words in the Maltese hymn are related to peace:

Guard, bestow understanding, grant wellness, and confirm us all, in unity and peace.

Let us pray together our National Anthem:

Conclusion

Let us make peace possible during playtime by sharing, giving chance to others, chatting and playing with everyone, and smiling at everyone.

Introduction

👉 Slide 1

Sometimes, when we look at the injustice, terror, violence, crime, and wars that plague the world, we feel we have no power to change the world.

Peace does not depend only on other people. We are also responsible to be peacemakers through our words, thoughts, actions, and reactions to the different people and situations we face daily. We bring peace when we respect every person’s rights and dignity.

Let us understand the meaning of peace by watching this video clip: (optional)

👉 Slide 2

Reflection

👉 Slide 3

The Maltese National Anthem has a message for everyone, regardless of nationality, gender, race, culture, or religion.

👉 Slide 4

Our anthem is a prayer and a wish for peace for the Maltese and the whole world.

👉 Slide 5

It is a song of appreciation for our islands’ history and natural beauty, for protection from wars and other disasters, and a prayer for the leaders of our country whose wise decisions will affect the whole world.

👉 Slide 6-7

Finally, we pray for each person to be responsible for the well-being of others, to respect diversity, and, as Pope Francis told us during his visit to Malta, to be a peace laboratory for each other and for the whole world.

Prayer

👉 Slide 8

Now let us stand and sing the lyrics of our National Anthem together.

(If possible, the lyrics of the Anthem with the meaning of the words in English on the interactive whiteboard, or the students can be given a template with the meaning of or a paraphrase of the words/lyrics.)

The leader of the assembly plays the National Anthem

This month St Theresa College celebrates the feast day of St Theresa of Avila on the 15th of October.  The leader of this assembly can end the session with this prayer which consists of a paraphrase of quotations from St Theresa’s writings:

Oh God, Give me true peace within.

Help me to trust you more. Help me Lord, to appreciate the gifts you have given each one of us and to love others as you have loved me. Amen.

Students can read about the Global Peace Alliance Campaign, which will be held on the 1st October 2022, from this website: https://www.lionsclubs.org/en/start-our-approach/youth/peace-poster

They can participate in the global peace festival by participating in a peace-poster competition or by creating these posters in art lessons and displaying them on boards around the school and on the school’s social media outlets.

Students can visit the Peace Lab at Hal Far to learn a lesson in empathy and understanding regarding the Malta immigrant population and to deepen their comprehension of the push and pull factors of immigration or forced immigration. This can be followed up by a class debate or linked to Geography, Religion, and Ethics studies. After the outing, students can prepare a project that will reinforce and integrate all information learned about the immigrants, including the results of questionnaires about different categories of people’s perceptions of the role and function of immigrants in Malta. Most importantly, the children can make their own judgments about the rights and wrongs of accepting these people in Malta and try to come up with solutions to some of the current problems.
