For children aged 8 to 10 years and their families

Animated reading, Creative writing, Reflective hands-on activity

The National Literacy Agency, in collaboration with Spiritual Development in Schools, organised a storytelling session within the programme entitled ‘With Reading and Writing I find a Beloved Space’ for children aged 8 to 10 years.

This animated reading session in Maltese and English from the published book ‘Spazju għal Qalbi – Beloved Space’ by author Silvana Cardona took place at L-Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, St Venera.

The group was warmly welcomed, and the session began in a calm and inviting atmosphere. Together, the children and their families first explored the book cover and the blurb, sharing their ideas about what the story might be about and what message it could hold. Their thoughts were thoughtful and creative, and this helped everyone feel ready to enter the story together.

The children then experienced the animated story Eye-Catching Wallpaper, which immediately captured their attention. As the story unfolded, they listened carefully and reacted with curiosity and excitement. Many of them connected with the characters and the message about noticing what truly matters in our lives.

After the storytelling, the children moved into a prayer space experience inspired by the story itself. Just as the characters in the story used the wall, the children were invited to write on a wooden wall prepared for them. This moment became very meaningful as they wrote their thoughts, feelings, and prayers quietly and respectfully.

The session then continued with a comic strip activity, where the children retold the story in their own way. Through drawings and short captions, they showed how well they understood the story and how deeply they had engaged with it. Each comic strip was unique and reflected the child’s personal interpretation.

Finally, the children wrote their own prayers and added them to their prayer wall. Some of the prayers were simple, honest, and deeply touching:

  • “Dear God, help me notice the good things every day.”
  • “Thank you for my family and for people who care about me.”
  • “Help me to be kind even when it is hard.”
  • “Jesus, help me not to feel afraid and to trust you.”
  • “Thank you for loving me just as I am.”

The session ended in a peaceful, joyful atmosphere, with each child receiving a book donated by the National Literacy Agency. It was a beautiful way to conclude the experience, encouraging the children to continue reading, writing, and discovering that books can truly become a beloved space in their lives.

This event is part of the With Reading and Writing, I find a Beloved Space programme.
