The National Literacy Agency, in collaboration with Spiritual Development in Schools, orgsnised a session of animated reading, creative writing and reflection as part of a new programme entitled ‘With Reading and Writing I find a Beloved Space’ for children aged 8–10 years and their families/guardians.

The story, ‘Silence in a Garden’, was organised on Saturday, 13th June 2026. The animated reading session in Maltese and English from the book Spazju għal Qalbi—Beloved Space by author Silvana Cardona took place at San Anton Gardens in Attard. During the session, the children were provided with resources in Maltese and English to help them express themselves.

The group was warmly welcomed, and the session began in a calm and inviting atmosphere. Together, the children and their families explored the book cover and the blurb, sharing their ideas about what the story might be about and the message it could hold. Their thoughtful and imaginative responses helped everyone prepare to enter the story together.

After listening to the story, children and their families took part in a meditative walk through the garden. As they walked, they slowed down to listen, observe, and notice the scents and sounds of nature around them. They experienced the beauty of silence and became more aware of God’s creation.

The meditative walk had a lasting impact on the children and families. They shared:

“I loved how I managed to slow down and be in silence.”

“When everything was quiet, I noticed things I had never seen before.”

“Silence made me feel peaceful.”

Using the words they gathered through their senses, the children created word lists which became the inspiration for their own creative writing, which they proudly shared with the group. It was an opportunity for children to practise reading and creative writing through imaginative and reflective activities that help them pray.

The session reminded everyone that, in the midst of our busy lives, slowing down can help us notice the beauty around us, listen more deeply, and find moments of peace and reflection.
