Introduction
We all have people who are special in our life. It could be our parents, guardians, family members, friends, teachers, and other adults who help us. These people are important in our life because they protect us and help us to be safe and happy. When people who live together care for each other, they are not just a group but a family, a community. Communities are important so that nobody feels alone. Let’s watch this video together:

As we saw in the video, the children took care of each other, they were careful to notice when someone else was in trouble and needed help. When we care for each other in this way, we will never feel alone because we know there is always someone who is looking out for us to make us feel safe and happy. One of the colleges is called after St Benedict. He is well-known for his thirst to love God and serve him in contemplative prayer.
Prayer
Dear God, please help us to care for each other so that we will always make each other feel happy and safe and never feel alone. Amen.

Introduction
We all have special and important people in our life. They could be the people we live with at home, our family, our friends, the people we meet at school, our classmates and teachers. Sometimes, we may be part of a group but we can still feel lonely. When people care about each other, they are not just a group of people but a community. People in a community know each other well, they are sensitive to each other’s needs and they support each other when they are in trouble or worried. They are also tolerant towards each other and forgive each other. It is important to try and build a positive community in our family, school, classroom, leisure groups as well as in our village or town. Members of a protective community also stand up for the rights of others, especially those who are being bullied or left out. Let us start off by watching this video clip:

Reflective Thought
As we saw in this video clip, the children spoke about protecting those persons in their community who are bullied, treated badly or treated in an unfair way. Standing up for others is not easy but it creates a loving and caring community. Sometimes, we have to protect people who are treated unfairly because they are different from the rest of the group. Maybe their physical appearance is different, the way they dress, their language, their clothes and food. Some people could also be bullied or treated in an unjust way because they are physically, emotionally or intellectually challenged. For example, a classmate who has a disability may be teased or left out or a person who is very shy could be left out of games and activities. It is important to be sensitive to the needs of these persons and to have the courage to stand up for them. It is also important to encourage other members of our community to join in our efforts so that these people who are bullied, treated unfairly or left out will be protected. In this way, our families, schools, classrooms, groups, villages or towns will be positive communities where nobody feels alone.

Prayer
Dear God, please help each one of us to be sensitive to the needs of each person we live, work and play with so that nobody will suffer bullying or loneliness. Amen.

Introduction
Sometimes, we can live within a group of people such as our family, friends, classmates, school, village or town and feel as if we are alone. Loneliness is a problem that plagues modern society because many people feel stranded and disconnected in spite of social media and modern telecommunications. People feel lonely when the members of their group do not get to know each other well and do not spend quality time together. It is therefore important to communicate better with the people around us, to listen to their opinions and problems, to be sensitive to their feelings, needs and wishes. When each member in a group is protective and supportive of each other, they build a positive community.

Reflective Thought
Having a sense of belonging within our families, schools and social groups erase loneliness and helps us to live a healthier life. A positive community consists of a group of people who trust each other, know each other well, listen actively to each other and stand up for each other. In a supportive community, nobody feels isolated and every member will feel safe and valued because there is always someone who will respect their dignity, rights, culture and diversity. It is therefore essential that we stand up for those persons who are treated badly or suffer injustice because they are different from others. For instance, physical, emotional or intellectual challenges can put certain members of a group at a disadvantage. In a positive community, members do not fight injustices, bullying or bad treatment alone but lobby for support by encouraging others to stand up with them. They connect with each other to bring a positive change. Members of a supportive community feel responsible for each other’s well-being, connect through common goals and achievements and create a caring, kind, welcoming and respectful environment.

As we saw in the video clip, Andrew spent his time alone at lunchtime because he was different. When people noticed his isolation, they invited him to be part of their group and to join in their activities.
