A session for all school educators

Maltese and English

The SDS team was invited to organise a Professional Development session for over 100 educators from St Clare College, San Ġwann Primary School on the theme of spiritual well-being. The chosen theme, Soul Space, invited participants to renew their connection with their personal and relational needs: with themselves, with others, with creation, and with God.

A “day” of reflection

Coinciding with the silent day preceding the elections, it was suggested that teachers, perhaps more than most, need moments of quietness—opportunities to learn again and again how to listen, and to regain fresh strength and renewed reasons to speak and to teach. In this sense, it was proposed that teachers remain, simultaneously, students of life and, for those who believe, students of God, who remains the Teacher par excellence.

Prayer Spaces

At the heart of the session, the SDS team set up and facilitated a series of prayer spaces that provided educators with opportunities to reflect and pray in creative and tangible ways. The venue, St Dominic’s Priory, proved particularly conducive to the experience, offering participants the silence necessary for recollection and the space needed to reconnect with God.

Workshop and sharing

At the end of the session, participants took time to discuss both the activities they appreciated most and those they found more challenging to process. The need for, and challenge of, reconciliation on different levels emerged as a recurring theme and helped shape the concluding reflection of the day: our human relationships are deeply interdependent. As was noted, “We are not at peace with others because we are not at peace with ourselves, and we are not at peace with ourselves because we are not at peace with God.”

The National Literacy Agency supported this Prayer Space session.
